    The Essence of Generalized Algebraic Data Types

    This paper considers direct encodings of generalized algebraic data types (GADTs) in a minimal suitable lambda-calculus. To this end, we develop an extension of System Fω with recursive types and internalized type equalities with injective constant type constructors. We show how GADTs and associated pattern-matching constructs can be directly expressed in the calculus, thus showing that it may be treated as a highly idealized modern functional programming language. We prove that the internalized type equalities in conjunction with injectivity rules increase the expressive power of the calculus by establishing a non-macro-expressibility result in Fω, and prove the system type-sound via a syntactic argument. Finally, we build two relational models of our calculus: a simple, unary model that illustrates a novel, two-stage interpretation technique, necessary to account for the equational constraints; and a more sophisticated, binary model that relaxes the construction to allow, for the first time, formal reasoning about data-abstraction in a calculus equipped with GADTs.</p

    Calcium-Dependent Interplay of Lithium and Tricyclic Antidepressants, Amitriptyline and Desipramine, on <i>N</i>-methyl-D-aspartate Receptors

    The facilitated activity of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in the central and peripheral nervous systems promotes neuropathic pain. Amitriptyline (ATL) and desipramine (DES) are tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) whose anti-NMDAR properties contribute to their analgetic effects. At therapeutic concentrations +, which suppresses the sodium–calcium exchanger (NCX) and enhances NMDAR CDD, also exhibits analgesia. Here, the effects of different [Li+]s on TCA inhibition of currents through native NMDARs in rat cortical neurons recorded by the patch-clamp technique were investigated. We demonstrated that the therapeutic [Li+]s of 0.5–1 mM cause an increase in ATL and DES IC50s of ~10 folds and ~4 folds, respectively, for the Ca2+-dependent NMDAR inhibition. The Ca2+-resistant component of NMDAR inhibition by TCAs, the open-channel block, was not affected by Li+. In agreement, clomipramine providing exclusively the NMDAR open-channel block is not sensitive to Li+. This Ca2+-dependent interplay between Li+, ATL, and DES could be determined by their competition for the same molecular target. Thus, submillimolar [Li+]s may weaken ATL and DES effects during combined therapy. The data suggest that Li+, ATL, and DES can enhance NMDAR CDD through NCX inhibition. This ability implies a drug–drug or ion–drug interaction when these medicines are used together therapeutically

    The purpose of the article is to study the legal nature and essence of the constitutional mechanism for the protection of citizens' rights in modern Russia. The leading method of studying the problem is the deductive method, which allows studying the legal nature and features of the implementation of the constitutional mechanism for protecting the rights of citizens in Russia. The article uses the inductive method, the method of systematic scientific analysis, and comparative legal and historical methods. The article concludes that the constitutional and legal status (as a legally fixed position of a person in their relations with the state and society) is part of the social status of an individual in society. The latter, in turn, is determined not only by legal norms but also by other regulators (political, moral, religious, etc.), mediating the diverse connections of a person with society and the state

    In order to estimate radiation effects on uranium enterprise staff and population teeth samples were collected for EPR tooth enamel dosimetry from population of Stepnogorsk city and staff of uranium mining enterprise in Shantobe settlment (Akmola region, North of Kazakhstan). By measurements of tooth enamel EPR spectra, the total absorbed dose in the enamel samples and added doses after subtraction of the contribution of natural background radiation are determined. For the population of Stepnogorsk city average added dose value of 4 +/- 11 mGy with variation of 51 mGy was obtained. For the staff of uranium mining enterprise in Shantobe settlment average value of added dose 95 +/- 20 mGy, with 85 mGy variation was obtained. Higher doses and the average value and a large variation for the staff, probably is due to the contribution of occupational exposure

    Calcium Export from Neurons and Multi-Kinase Signaling Cascades Contribute to Ouabain Neuroprotection in Hyperhomocysteinemia

    Pathological homocysteine (HCY) accumulation in the human plasma, known as hyperhomocysteinemia, exacerbates neurodegenerative diseases because, in the brain, this amino acid acts as a persistent N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor agonist. We studied the effects of 0.1&ndash;1 nM ouabain on intracellular Ca2+ signaling, mitochondrial inner membrane voltage (&phi;mit), and cell viability in primary cultures of rat cortical neurons in glutamate and HCY neurotoxic insults. In addition, apoptosis-related protein expression and the involvement of some kinases in ouabain-mediated effects were evaluated. In short insults, HCY was less potent than glutamate as a neurotoxic agent and induced a 20% loss of &phi;mit, whereas glutamate caused a 70% decrease of this value. Subnanomolar ouabain exhibited immediate and postponed neuroprotective effects on neurons. (1) Ouabain rapidly reduced the Ca2+ overload of neurons and loss of &phi;mit evoked by glutamate and HCY that rescued neurons in short insults. (2) In prolonged 24 h excitotoxic insults, ouabain prevented neuronal apoptosis, triggering proteinkinase A and proteinkinase C dependent intracellular neuroprotective cascades for HCY, but not for glutamate. We, therefore, demonstrated here the role of PKC and PKA involving pathways in neuronal survival caused by ouabain in hyperhomocysteinemia, which suggests existence of different appropriate pharmacological treatment for hyperhomocysteinemia and glutamate excitotoxicity
